Six Words to Make Up Hours

Another option to make up attendance hours is a writing exercise.  Smith Mag, an online magazine for writers, has a project called Six Word Memoirs; the idea is to write a life story in exactly six words.  You can do this to make up some hours.  Go to the Six Word Memoir website and create a free account.  Then post up to six separate six-word memoirs.  Then email me with the link to your profile so I can read your work.  You will earn one half-hour of attendance credit for each entry, up to three hours of attendance credit.

Portfolio

Now that you have completed all five written assignment for English 0750, it is time to assemble the final project, the Portfolio. The portfolio consists of three of your previous assignments, selected from the Goals Statement, Job Application, Summary, Instructions, and Essay. Select the pieces that you feel best reflect your work in this course, and revise each substantially. These revisions will be based on my previous comments, your classmates’ feedback, and your own rereading of your work.

The purpose of the portfolio is to see what you have accomplished in this course and prove that you are ready for English 0950 and other college-level and practical writing situations. This also acts as the final exam for this course, demonstrating your ability to revise your own writing in meaningful ways. You must submit a passing portfolio in order to pass the class.

Before I accept your portfolio, you must have met the other requirements for passing the class: you must have earned a score of at least 21 on the five assignments, and you must have earned at least 65 hours of attendance & participation.

We will conduct revision workshops during the remaining class periods. Bring to class the assignments you will be revising to receive feedback from your classmates.

When you hand in your portfolio, simply staple the assignments together, making sure your name is on each one.Your portfolio is due in class on Wednesday, December 9.

Earning Hours for 11/18

As announced previously, we will not hold class on Wednesday, November 18.  However, you will still be able to earn that day’s hours.  To do so, read this sample essay and email me at rdturner@cnm.edu with the following information:

  1. What is the thesis of this essay?
  2. Which paragraphs constitute the intro, the body, and the conclusion of the essay?
  3. What would be your primary suggestion for revising this essay?

Email your responses to these questions to me by 8pm this Saturday, November 21, to earn the two hours of attendance for Wednesday.

Changes to Schedule

Due to a series of meetings that I need to attend next week, there are some changes to our upcoming schedule.  First, on Monday, we will hold a workshop for the Essay assignment–bring your planning materials and rough draft to work on your Essay in class.

Also, we will not meet as a class on Wednesday, November 18.  I will post information on earning that day’s attendance hours, and we will discuss that in class on Monday.

Attendance Makeup Option #1

As some of you need more attendance hours than we have remaining this term, we will start looking at ways to make up those hours.  The first option is to attend both classes on workshop days.  You earn hours for being in and working during class sessions, so doing this earns up to two extra hours each day.  My English 0750 classes are held Mondays & Wednesdays at the following times:

  • 8:30-10:20 in ST 14A (east of Ken Chappy Hall)
  • 1:00-2:50 in MS 308

We will hold workshops on the following days:

  • Monday, 11/16
  • Monday, 11/23
  • Monday, 11/30
  • Wednesday, 12/2
  • Monday, 12/7
